The next morning, the young witches set up their cauldrons on long tables under a large wooden gazebo, ready for their Cauldron Class with Witch Buggins.
Witch Buggins was a remarkably small witch. Her black cloak swished along the ground as she bustled about the camp like a busy beetle. She was very rarely still, constantly collecting, mixing, pouring and bottling.
‘Good morning, witches,’ she said, hopping onto a wooden step so that she could see over the tables. ‘Preparing a potion is just like baking a cake. All you need are the correct ingredients, a wooden spoon and your magic spell. Mix it all up and bizzle-buzzle, your potion is ready. We’re going to start with the Dream Dust potion. A sprinkling of Dream Dust on your pillow will send you to sleep to dream your dreamiest dreams. And who knows, maybe your dream will come true.’
‘My dreamiest dream is that one day I’ll be prime minister,’ boomed Mati. ‘I’ll be the best prime minister the country has ever elected. My first rule will be to ban zoos because animals should be free in the wild, but I’ll allow my best friends to have a special permit to keep one wild animal each, because imagine how cool it would be to gallop to school on a zebra.’
‘Quite contradictory,’ tutted Witch Buggins. ‘As you’re moving on to Potions: Part Two, you’ll be given the list of ingredients needed but the magic spells must now come from you. Your cauldron will do exactly what you ask it to do, so use your spell words wisely to avoid a cauldron catastrophe. And do take care to use the right ingredients and measure the quantities correctly. You don’t want your Dream Dust exploding into fire-cracking, fizz-whizzing, sizzling sparkles. So, haste not waste, let’s get brewing.’
The witches opened up their Witch Tablets on ‘Potions: Part Two’. Grace-Ella worked next to Aisha and Twilight, with Mati and Moonbeam and Dilys and Dobbles at the other end of their table.
‘What’s your dreamiest dream?’ Grace-Ella asked Aisha.
‘It’s to use my magic to help with medicines. Dad’s a doctor and he’s always telling me about illnesses around the world. I’m going to build my own laboratory and work day and night on my potions to cure illnesses.’
‘Wow! That’s an amazing dream,’ said Grace-Ella. The only dream she could think of right then was that she could be as brilliantly brave and clever as Mati and Aisha.
Cork stoppers popped as potion bottles were opened and ingredients were poured, scooped and sprinkled into the cauldrons.
‘Six sprigs of lavender and three pretty petals from the pink lady’s slipper flower,’ Grace-Ella said, as she measured the ingredients and Mr Whiskins plopped them into the cauldron. ‘Seven spoonfuls of sticky, syrupy sap and a handful of sleepy grass. A ladle of lemon balm and a scrape of bark to add a small spark.’
‘Once you’ve said your magic spell, the Dream Dust will shimmer on the surface,’ said Witch Buggins, scuttling around the tables. ‘Gently scoop it out with your strainers and pour it into the little silk pouches.
